Loft living in the heart of Penzance
No.3 Abbey Street is an artist’s home and studio located just off Penzance’s historic Chapel Street, surrounded by many buildings dating back to the Georgian era. It’s available for the first time this year (2016) for limited holiday lets. This is an unusual property for many reasons; built in 1805 as a school room just behind the old harbour warehouses it housed the education of generations of Penwithians, finally closing down in 1935. It found a new identity in 1950 as the Pooley & Rogers Auction Room running until 1998 when it was finally forced to close because it had no loading yard – the delivery truck would block Abbey Street for hours on end and literal fist-fights ensued!
Since then the building has been carefully restored and converted to provide a large, light and spacious place to live and work. Loft living in Cornwall is hard to find, and No.3 is a relaxed, lived-in place – it’s a real home not a show home; some of it’s a bit scuffed around the edges but it’s clean and bright and a delight to spend time in. The interior has been designed and built by the artist in an organic way, slowly making the best of location and light and limitations. It’s a work of art in itself, like walking into someone’s harmonious creative world.
